Initially, they dove naked, using only a smooth stone, a skandalopetra, tied to a rope for guidance. These unarmored dives rarely exceeded 25–30 meters, and the stone’s hydrodynamic shape let divers touch the sea almost as if they were part of it. In the 1850s, the arrival of the Standard Diving Dress, or skafandro, marked a turning point in sponge diving. The helmet, fed by surface-supplied air, became central to a growing industry eager to extract more from the sea. Now encased in a protective shell, the diver could reach new depths and harvest sponges previously out of reach. But with greater depth came greater risk. Thousands of Kalymnian men suffered paralysis, pain, or death. Between 1886 and 1910, an estimated 40% of these “mechanics”, as the hard-hat divers were called, either died or became permanently disabled.Though the economic demand for sponges (for hygienic/medicinal/industrial purposes) fueled this industrial expansion, the divers themselves were often exploited laborers, pressured by owners and middlemen to push beyond safe limits. The shift from the skandalopetra to the skafandro not only transformed the dive physically but marked a rupture in the relationship between humans and the sea.&nbsp;Diving with the skandalopetra was an organic practice, where the diver was almost in communion with the sea,&nbsp;using a simple tool to navigate but still deeply connected to the natural world (not pushing the limits of the human body). In contrast, the introduction of the skafandro (diving suit) transformed the practice into a more technology-driven one. The diver entered the ocean equipped with industrial tools, marking a shift to a form of industrial conquest. Industrialization and capitalist expansion increased the pressure on divers to push their bodies to the limit in pursuit of higher yields. To meet the demand for sponges, they undertook long trips: eight-months during summer, and two-months during winter, diving many times per day. The sponge industry began to decline in the mid-20th century due to a combination of factors, including overfishing, outbreaks of sponge disease, and the introduction of synthetic sponges in the 1940s and 1950s. O Choros tou Michanikou (The Dance of the Mechanic) In 1952, physical educator Theofilos Klonaris choreographed O Choros tou Michanikou (The Dance of the Mechanic) to honor the island’s sponge diving heritage and the hardships endured by its divers. The lead dancer embodies a disabled former sponge diver, trembling and crippled by “the bends,” leaning heavily on his cane. But as the music slowly builds, he finds strength, discards his cane, and transforms the dance into one of resilience and pride. This performance is both a tribute to the divers’ perseverance and a protest that exposes the silent, often invisible toll their labor exacted. Fysiological pressure Decompression sickness, or “the bends,” occurs when a diver ascends too rapidly. Under pressure, gases (especially nitrogen) dissolve into the body’s tissues. If the ascent is too quick, these gases block blood vessels, inflame tissues, and disrupt the nervous system. The work moves through different moments in time and areas of the site: from water shaping the terrain over time, to histories of farming, to contemporary issues such as nitrogen pollution, as well as the dumping of industrial waste, such as ceramic shards from manufacturers including Royal Sphinx and Mosa. Unfolding across five locations, the performance takes the form of a spatial, performative essay, in which each site reveals a different fragment of the narrative. Have plants and animals managed to adapt to the polluted environment? Monsters of the Surface delves into these questions, leading the audience through layers of earth and history. Combining performance, archival material from the Breda City archive, and diverse perspectives (such as a factory worker and nettle), this project reveals the hidden stories embedded in the soil. Monsters van de Bovengrond is created in collaboration with performer Bodine Sutorius, soil remediator Koen van Rens, soil specialist John Vegt, and the Breda City Archive. This project is part of KOPlopers, an initiative by KOP that pairs artists with experts from different fields to create meaningful public experiences. De tot dan toe met uitbuiting doordrenkte, bitterzoete kristallen gewonnen in Brazilië en Suriname zullen vanaf nu geperst worden uit bieten die wortelen op onze eigen bodem. 131 bietenlossers verzamelen suikerbieten in manden. De vrouwen stoppen de manden zo vol mogelijk, want per mand krijgen zij betaald. Over loopplanken tillen ze de volle manden naar de wal. De klei van de bieten, de kalk waarmee ze schoongespoten worden, en de pesticiden die van hen afstromen, zakken steeds dieper weg in de zinkputten. De bieten stromen door ondergrondse gleuven, die nog steeds onder onze voeten liggen, naar de machines, waar hun zoete massa’s zich omvormen tot bergen suiker. Twee enorme silo’s, gevuld met spierwitte kristallen, torenen hoog boven de stad uit. De suikerbergen verrijzen als nieuwe bergen in het vlakke land, en de fabrieksarbeiders, als kleine figuren naast deze reuzen, steken hun stokken in de klonten. I was drawn to the many different structures, surfaces and materialities of industrial waste located in close proximity to the residency. Much of the waste had been there for years, seemingly contained. But some of the factories are still running, and the contamination continues still today. Visible, in the shape of thick, tainted and smelly streams flowing into the Tagus estuary. Invisible, among others through the extra land that was built in the Tagus River with the use of industrial waste to make the industrial area bigger. Hence the sediment is also deeply contaminated: “The current study was carried out in the Tagus estuary, located in the Lisbon metropolitan area, which is the most populated&nbsp;area of Portugal (2.7 million people). This estuary, one of the largest in Europe (320 km2 of area), has an extremely high socio-economic importance, since it supports numerous industries and a high population density. Tagus estuary has a historic and intensive anthropogenic pressure, due to urban effluents from about 3 million inhabitants, together with contamination resultant from diverse chemical, petrochemical,&nbsp;metallurgic, shipbuilding, cement manufacture industriesand agriculture fertilizers/pesticides (Duarte et al., 2008). These pressures led to a high accumulation of trace elements in sediments and organisms, particularly in the Barreiro area” (Patricia Pereira, 2013). Local biologists have been looking into the eyes of a specific fish specie in Barreiro, and they reveal high levels of metal-contamination. The fish eye has a wide surface area that is continuously in direct contact with the external medium, thus this neurosensory organ can be a relevant uptake route for metals. The eye lens, in particular, has a unique morphology, offering a historical record of exposure to metals throughout their lifetime.&nbsp;This made me reflect on the diving suit in a broader perspective; as a delusion of purity and protection in the form of a protective skin. Metals are now contained in these bodies of water, into the bodies of fish, and in turn in human bodies.1) The copper piece of this series resembles a fragile, shattered yet sharp diving armor, with imprints that refer to the natural aquatic environments it has entered. The shapes resemble gills, scales, and the shape of an eye: blurring the boundaries of whose skin, armor or eye we are actually looking at. 2) The textile piece of this series is dyed in pyrite-contaminated waters at the industrial site in Barreiro. Through stitches and clay aquatic organisms such as plants and scales are resembled, as well as nerves and veins (which play a role in distributing metals).
